A 26-year-old California teacher has demonstrated the growing appeal of accessory dwelling units as an alternative to traditional homeownership, constructing a $260,000 ADU on her family's property near Yosemite National Park.

Mia Corippo built the 748-square-foot unit with two bedrooms and bathrooms, choosing to invest her savings in the smaller dwelling rather than purchasing a separate home.

She now shares the space with her sister while maintaining proximity to her parents' main residence.

Corippo's decision reflects a broader trend among young Californians who are turning to ADUs amid the state's ongoing housing affordability crisis.

California has significantly expanded ADU regulations in recent years, allowing property owners to add secondary units on their land with streamlined permitting processes.

These units, also known as granny flats or in-law suites, can be built as detached structures, garage conversions, or additions to existing homes.

For property owners, ADUs represent an opportunity to increase property value while providing additional rental income or housing for family members.

The units also offer a pathway for young adults to achieve housing independence without taking on traditional mortgage debt, particularly in high-cost areas where median home prices often exceed $800,000.
