Accessory Dwelling Units become popular housing option

A new evidence brief from Habitat for Humanity and AARP highlights the growing role of accessory dwelling units as a solution to California's housing affordability crisis.

The research shows that ADUs are becoming increasingly popular among both low-income households and older adults seeking more accessible living arrangements, as nearly 30 percent of all households are considered cost-burdened, spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs.

ADUs, which are independent housing units located on the same lot as a single-family home, offer flexibility in design and configuration.

These units can be attached or detached from the primary residence, built above garages, or converted from existing basement space.

For California property owners, ADUs represent an opportunity to generate additional rental income while helping address the state's housing shortage.

The units are particularly valuable for older adults who may need help with housing costs or prefer to age in place with family nearby.

The brief showcases four Habitat for Humanity affiliates actively implementing ADU programs in their communities, demonstrating the practical applications of these housing solutions.

For developers and homeowners, the research underscores ADUs' potential for creating housing stability and affordability in markets where traditional housing options have become increasingly unattainable due to rising materials and labor costs.
