Butte County launches pre-approved accessory dwelling unit and small residential home plans

Butte County has launched a new program offering no-cost, pre-approved building plans for accessory dwelling units and small residential homes, providing property owners with streamlined construction options that comply with current state and county regulations.

The initiative, funded through a REAP Grant, aims to simplify the development process by eliminating the need for custom architectural plans and reducing permitting delays.

The pre-approved plans are designed to meet all applicable building codes and zoning requirements, allowing homeowners and developers to move more quickly from concept to construction.

Property owners can access these plans along with detailed checklists and submittal requirements through the county's public permits portal, which also features instructional videos to guide users through the application process.

The program includes specific guidance on different housing types, including the distinctions between Title 24 and Title 25 home classifications.

This development reflects California's broader push to address the housing shortage by reducing regulatory barriers and construction costs.

Accessory dwelling units, also known as granny flats or in-law units, have become a key component of the state's housing strategy, as they allow property owners to add rental income while increasing housing stock in existing neighborhoods.

By providing free, pre-approved plans, Butte County is removing a significant cost barrier that often prevents homeowners from pursuing ADU construction projects.
