More than 1,000 ADUs have been approved in SLO County since 2020. Is it helping?

San Luis Obispo County has approved more than 1,200 accessory dwelling units since 2020, reflecting California's broader push to address the housing crisis through ADU development.

Accessory dwelling units, also known as granny flats or in-law units, are secondary housing structures built on single-family residential properties that the state has promoted as a key tool for increasing housing supply without requiring new land development.

The surge in ADU permits follows years of state legislation streamlining the approval process and reducing regulatory barriers for property owners seeking to build these units.

However, industry experts question whether the increase in permitted ADUs is translating into meaningful additions to the actual housing stock available to renters and buyers.

Lindy Hatcher from the Home Builders Association of the Central Coast notes that while ADUs help local jurisdictions meet state-mandated housing production goals, their ultimate success depends on property owners' willingness and financial ability to complete construction.

The trend highlights California's reliance on alternative housing strategies as traditional development struggles to keep pace with demand.

For property developers and homeowners, ADUs represent both an opportunity to generate rental income and help address local housing shortages, though high construction costs remain a significant barrier to widespread adoption across the region.
