Santa Barbara Homeowner Installs Ready-Made ADU by Crane
A Santa Barbara family successfully installed a complete two-bedroom accessory dwelling unit in their backyard using an innovative crane delivery system that took just 15 minutes from truck to final placement.
The 690-square-foot ADU, manufactured by Redwood City-based company Samara, was delivered as a fully assembled 40,000-pound structure and lifted over the existing home into the backyard in a single piece.
Homeowners Roy and Brittany Bryan decided to add the ADU after having their fourth child and running out of space in their primary residence.
Roy Bryan, a radiologist who works from home, plans to use the unit as a home office and guest room.
The family was attracted to Samara's streamlined approach, which handles the entire process from county permitting through manufacturing, delivery, and installation.
This installation demonstrates how prefabricated ADUs are making it easier for California homeowners to add housing on their properties.
ADUs, or accessory dwelling units, are secondary housing units allowed on single-family residential lots under California law to help address the state's housing shortage.
The crane installation method represents a significant advancement in ADU deployment, potentially reducing construction disruption and timeline from months to a single day.
For property developers and homeowners, such turnkey solutions could accelerate ADU adoption across California by eliminating many traditional construction challenges.
