Tiny homes, big improvements: 3 people share why they love living in ADUs

California homeowners are increasingly turning to accessory dwelling units as an affordable housing solution, as highlighted by three residents who shared their experiences living in these compact structures.

Newlyweds Aislyn and Ali Benjamin built a 1,200-square-foot ADU in their parents' San Ramon backyard after discovering traditional home purchases were financially unfeasible, with median home prices in nearby Danville reaching $1.9 million as of December.

The Benjamins' three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit cost $500,000 to construct with family assistance, demonstrating how ADUs can provide homeownership opportunities in expensive California markets.

These compact housing units typically range from 150 to 1,200 square feet and cost between $100,000 and $300,000 to design and build, though additional expenses for site preparation, inspections, utility connections, and permits can increase total project costs.

California has actively supported ADU development through grant programs designed to help homeowners finance construction, part of broader state efforts to increase affordable housing supply.

For property developers and homeowners, ADUs represent a significant opportunity to maximize land use and generate rental income while addressing the state's housing shortage.

The growing acceptance of ADU living among younger Californians suggests continued demand for these alternative housing solutions, particularly in high-cost regions where traditional homeownership remains out of reach for many residents.
